By 1123 SF, the Empire and the Republic found themselves economically exhausted. Two generations of their young people largely injured or dead. Their lands were devastated by [[Bloodstones|bloodstone ruptures]], by rogue spellcasters crazed and mutated by [[Strain]], and by all the many mundane evils of war. Their wildernesses and trade routes were beset by unpredictable graven hulks. The widespread spiritual crisis of the [[Blood Debt|blood debt]] was the final straw, and a truce was negotiated.
