With the Truce of Foxhollow, the Shangon Empire and the Freelands Republic established a large demilitarized Neutral Zone in the center of the continent of Oban. Both nations agreed to deploy only minimal forces as peacekeepers. All trade and other travel would be monitored.
When the Truce was signed, there was a tentative plan to negotiate a permanent treaty. Such a treaty would permanently divide the Neutral Zone between the nations, and end the need for peacekeepers. However, negotiations didn't proceed as quickly as some leaders hoped. At the start of Season 1, four years after the Truce, the Neutral Zone was becoming the new normal for the people who lived there.
The Empire largely secured and patrolled the northern half of the Neutral Zone, while the Republic focused on the southern half.
